As a caregiver, you know the stress of juggling your own needs with those of a loved one. And sometimes it’s hard to find the help you need. Finding out how to get your loved one the right care, and then pay for it is probably one of your biggest worries, right up there with sorting out medications and providing the safest environment possible. You can take some steps to make things a little easier:
Keep records. Gather contact information for family members, insurance documents, financial records, and other important documents. You’re not being nosy – this information will all come in handy if you need to file for public benefits, including Medicaid.
Prepare for an emergency. Along with family contact numbers, keep emergency numbers and doctor’s phone numbers nearby. If your loved one has signed a healthcare proxy or living will, keep a copy near the door, along with insurance cards or other information you may need during an emergency.
